Principal's Message

Welcome to McDowell Early College. 
 
Welcome to the McDowell Early College Website! We hope the website will provide you with the information you need about our school. It is our desire for our website to be a place where current students/parents can find pertinent information about what is "Happening" at MEC and prospective students/parents can find out information about the recruitment process.

This is the beginning of my 27th year as an educator. I have learned much along the way. Perhaps most important is that everyone needs to feel connected to something or someone to be an effective member of any group. Our school culture at MEC embraces the idea that individuals who are engaged and have relationships with others will be successful. Students are encouraged to lead, to find their passion and are encouraged to connect not only with our school community but also the greater community of McDowell County. Our students average more than 8000 community service hours per year.

 
MEC has a great staff that is committed to encouraging every student to reach their full potential. The maturity demonstrated by our student body and their acceptance of each other permeates the McDowell Technical Community College Campus daily. We recognize at MEC that in our school community we must respect each other, seek understanding of differences and learn to live together. My mission as a school leader is to have high expectations for all students and staff, have a supportive and responsive attitude with students and staff, and encourage leadership throughout our school.

News & Announcements

Mandatory College Night for Students in Mrs. Padgett's Seminar

Mrs. Padgett's graduating seminar will have a mandatory "College Night" for students and parents on October 20th from 6-7:30pm in room 19-113. This meeting will be in lieu of fall student led conferences for all seniors in Mrs. Padgett's seminar. Please make plans to attend. We will have guest speaker from ASU Distance Ed. and Mrs. Ingle will be speaking on financial aid.

Graduate Portrait Information

Class of 2016, Lifetouch will be in McDowell County during the month of July to take your senior portraits. This year, they will need you to call and make an appointment for your senior portraits. The available dates that they are at McDowell High School are July 14, July 15, July 16, July 20 & July 21. You will call their office directly to make your appointment, at 828-684-0390. Lifetouch will be mailing a packet of information directly to your home around the first of July. They will mail you proofs, and then you will be given the option to purchase pictures. You are not required to do so. You will be included in the yearbook whether you buy pictures or not. Please contact Mrs. Hood if you have questions or concerns. (Make-up pictures will be held at MEC on August 25. Cap & Gown portraits will be on January 29, 2016).
